Can we do a Christmas party as long as we call “all inclusive family vacations” party? Recognizing the variety of celebrations of Christian and non-Christian all inclusive family vacations is essential to the success of having people feel valued.

Besides Christmas additional vacations such as Eid al-Fitr, Ramadan’s festival of gift-giving (Muslims), Hanukkah (Jewish), Kwanzaa (African Americans) and Pancha Ganapati (Hindu) may also be celebrated in December depending on the lunar calendar. Many Christians, though well-intended, will try to liken Hanukkah to Christmas in an attempt to be inclusive. Recognize and educate different religious vacations throughout the year not only during the month of December.

Develop a policy that addresses religious concerns such as time taken off from work or school. In the United States, Christian all inclusive family vacations are institutionalized into the calendar and as a result there is no need to use personal days or vacation days to celebrate their vacations. Allow flexible time in the work setting so that people can celebrate their vacations without being penalized or discriminated against.  Outline what is and is not appropriate for December celebrations and provide that information well in advance.

For some, the fuss being made regarding the December all inclusive family vacations is blown way out of proportion. The question asked by many is, “What if everyone in your office or school celebrates Christmas is there really a need to acknowledge these other religious vacations?”

First, there is a high likelihood that there are people within your organization who do not celebrate Christmas but may feel hesitant about sharing that information. Second, why would we teach Christians about non-Christian religions is the same reason we teach people that only speak English another language. By opening our hearts and minds to all religious traditions we are serving the greater good and our connections with others grow deeper.

It is no different if you have an autistic child in the all inclusive family vacations. To an autistic child, all inclusive family vacations can be scary and confusing, or they can be a great learning experience, leaving behind wonderful memories the entire family can enjoy.

First, choose your location based on your autistic child’s needs. Quieter vacations are possible at small beaches and by going camping. You also might want to consider taking your all inclusive family vacations during the off-season, if you children’s school work will not be disrupted. These give your autistic child more comfort if he or she is nervous in crowded situations, and provides you with piece of mind. If you have to deal with an airport, remember that security may have to touch your child and be prepared for this.

Choose a location and activities that everyone can enjoy, but also that provide learning and social interaction opportunities for your autistic child. Being outside, a beach is also a great place for your child to yell without disrupting others. Remember that most people on all inclusive family vacations at the location you choose will have never dealt with autism before.

Know your child’s constitutional laws, and also be willing to compromise. For example, if a restaurant is reluctant to serve you after your child caused a scene there last night, explain the situation and ask if it would be possible to take your food to go, even if this is normally not done.
