Volunteers: Teenage Travel to Africa
Almost as a whole, the continent of Africa enmeshed in a seemingly endless teenage travel array of problems and can use all the help it can get. At the same time, in much of the West there are socially conscious teenagers with three months of summer break or gap periods between leaving high school and entering college. It seems like a common sense teenage travel idea: why not volunteer to help people that really need it and at the same time get an amazing, life-changing experience for out of it for yourself?
Today there are a myriad of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) out there working to help all with all the various problems face by people in Africa, from helping people modernize their communities and creating job opportunities to helping people suffering from disease or malnutrition. Virtually every country in Africa has a myriad of NGOs actively trying the alleviate problems or otherwise help people. Further, many of these NGOs are actively looking for volunteers to help them on the ground.
In exchange for replacing empty platitudes with tangible real world action and really making a difference in people’s lives, you also get an experience of a life time. You get to travel to a completely different place, experience a completely different culture and way of life, and help people in genuine need. This is something vastly more meaningful than vacation getaway and will provide with insights that would be utterly impossible to have otherwise.
Teenage travel to Africa as volunteers with various NGOs and other organizations has been around since the famines of the 1980s, but today the Internet has radically changed the process. Today you can find NGOs specifically dealing with whatever issues you think are the most important and many of them will have volunteer opportunities available. Depending on where you want to go and what you want to do, the opportunities vary and it can take some time to find the right volunteer program but it is well worth the effort.
